I believe that you are already aware of the case in which the U.S. Treasury Department ordered a domain registrar to retire domains names related with Cuba:

This case shows, besides the viciousness of the US blockade against Cuba, the need to make ICANN independent of the US Government.

 

Do you remember that during the WGIG meetings we discussed the convenience of making ICANN an international organization with a host country agreement with the US government?

 

Maybe it is time to retake this discussion.
